Having alts inWorld of Warcraftis practically an assumed affair, as the game encourages players to give other classes a try – and with the launch ofDragonflight, getting one’s alt up to speed will be faster than ever.World of Warcrafthas not always been friendly to alts, and as the game’s nine expansion packs came and went, so did all sorts of catch-up mechanics for these secondary characters. As fun as Timeless Isle might have been inMists of Pandaria, modernWorld of Warcraftplayersneed to worry about more than just their loot.
WithDragonflightintroducing the Evoker, it stands to reason that people will want to level a Dracthyr character at some point over the course of the expansion, but that Evoker will also need to keep up with their main character’s gear, Renown level and reputation.Shadowlandswas especially notorious in handicapping one’s alt through staggering their Renown level progression at launch, and thankfully it seems thatDragonflightwill not be headed in the same direction.

One of the last changes made to therelease build ofDragonflight’s betawas to implement a Renown catch-up system that, on paper, seems effective and elegant in its simplicity. The concept respects the hierarchy between main and alt characters, but allows players to invest in an account-wide unlock that doubles the reputation gain for other characters of lower Renown level.
Players who have reached Renown Level 10 can purchase “Word of a Worthy Ally I” which grants a 100% reputation gain increase to any characters on their account below Renown Level 10. Furthermore, those who have reached Renown Level 20 are offered “Word of a Worthy Ally II” that grants a 100% reputation bonus for the alts below Level 20. These bonuses stack, which means thatWorld of Warcraftplayers who have purchased both unlocks can have a 200% reputation gain increase for characters below Level 10.
The change was noticed by Icy Veins and posted on their forums, with the reception mostly being positive. Some players can’t help but argue if Renown has overstayed its welcome, but compared to the oldreputation system inWorld of Warcraft, the version seen inDragonflightseems like an objective upgrade. Players who have yet to level their alts in preparation forDragonflight’s launch – but plan to do so – should take advantage of the experience buffs brought by the anniversary event and the Winds of Wisdom.
