Summary

AWorld of Warcraftplayer undertook an intriguing experiment of leveling up an Allied race character all the way to level cap without spending a single coin or selling a single item. While modernWorld of Warcraftplaces a far bigger emphasis on its endgame as both the destination and the journey, leveling can often be a relaxing reprieve from the content treadmill.

World of Warcraftplayers have long attempted to add challenges or quirks to the standard leveling experience, and the developers at Blizzard have even provided their support, such as introducingofficial Hardcore servers to Classic. Whereas leveling is a much more meaningful part of the game in Classic, the experience has largely been marginalized in Retail – though arguably in favor of alts.

The worth of leveling a character in Retail was documented by Soapy_99, who took aWarrior inWorld of Warcraftall the way to Level 70 without spending any money or selling any of their items. Such lengths were taken in this endeavor that their character, Elandrus, never paid for a flight master’s service and even opened a Guild Bank to hoard an entire mountain of loot.

World of Warcraft Player Reaches Level Cap Without Selling Items or Spending Money

The journey took Elandrus acrossallWorld of Warcraftexpansions, though the only instanced content was done inDragonflight. In order to make sure that no money was spent purchasing bank slots or investing in bags, these funds and items were prepared ahead of time. Over the course of the experiment, Elandrus earned a grand total of 14,191 gold and 566 items. No money was spent on repair bills either, as Elandrus was capable of replacing equipment faster than it could break.

While some would argue that the whole undertaking was a waste of time, Soapy_99 managed to provide an intriguing look into how much wealth a player accumulates on their journey to thelevel cap inWorld of Warcraft. After having sold all their loot to a vendor, Elandrus had earned 20,158 gold in total. This amount is significantly higher compared to the amount earned during Soapy_99’s previous attempt duringShadowlands, where their character only earned 5,432 gold on the way to Level 50.

With the arrival ofWarbands inWorld of Warcraft, the game has fully embraced alts as part of a player’s approach to content. Though the majority still focus on one main character, especially over the course of a raid tier, there is still plenty of joy to be found in leveling an alt in the usual (or unorthodox) way.
