Struck by nostalgia, aWorld of Warcraftplayer found a spot in theDragonflightexpansion to recreate the iconic “Bliss” wallpaper featured in Windows XP, taking a screenshot and sharing it on social media. After the post made the rounds, other players asked where in theWorld of Warcraftthe shot was taken so that they could see and recreate a form of “Bliss” for themselves.
Though Blizzard Entertainmentstopped support for Windows XP in 2017across their games, includingWorld of Warcraft, that has not stopped users from fondly remembering one of Microsoft’s best-selling operating systems. The “Bliss” picture was originally taken in California’s Wine Country by photographer Charles O’Rear in early 1996, five years before the launch of Windows XP. After O’Rear sold the picture as a stock photo, Microsoft acquired the full rights to the picture in 2000 and gave it the iconic name of “Bliss” which is still used to this day. The image then became the focal point of their marketing campaign for Windows XP.

A Reddit user by the name of Thoscellen took their version of “Bliss” inWorld of Warcraft: Dragonflight, as they posted a screenshot from the Ohn’ahran Plains and posted it on the r/wow subreddit. The post then evoked memories of the iconic wallpaper and the operating system that manyWorld of Warcraftplayers played on around the time of the game’s 2004 release. InDragonflight, theOhn’ahan Plains are home to the Maruuk Centaur Clans, one of the factions that players can build Renown with for various rewards, including gear and cosmetics. With only a few mammoths and a bird of prey as background creatures, Thoscellen said that they kept them in the picture after mulling it over. However, Thoscellen returned to the plains and took more screenshots from different angles to suit the requests of other Redditors on the post.
Thoscellen’s post received over 1.6k upvotes on the r/wow subreddit within the first day of posting, and players praised them for their efforts. Thoscellen said the location in the Ohn’ahran Plains they took the shot was at coordinates X55.7, Y60.8, which is in the south-central part of the zone. With the plains serving as a potential focal point forthe New World Tree storyline,World of Warcraftplayers should have ample opportunity to explore it and see if they can recreate a “Bliss” wallpaper of their own.
World of Warcraftwill have a busy 2023 ahead, as updates to bothDragonflightandWrath of the Lich King Classicare planned throughout the year. Whether players will continue to keep up with them or not remains to be seen.
